It was minted in Lampsacus, an ancient Greek city on the eastern side of the Hellespont in northern Troad. Lysimachos, a bodyguard and successor of Alexander the Great, proclaimed himself King of Thrace in 306 BC and expanded his rule to Macedonia and parts of Asia Minor. Around 297-296 BC, he introduced a new coinage, the Lysimachoi, showcasing Alexander the Great adorned with a royal diadem and ram's horns, signifying his deification as Ammon-Zeus on the obverse, and on the reverse, Athena seated, holding a small Nike, with the inscription ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΛΥΣΙΜΑΧΟΥ (Of King Lysimachos). These coins were produced in various cities within his realm, with Lampsacus being the principal mint in Asia Minor.
