Jacob’s Frear In front of a well, in a well, that is, Jesus and a woman, a Samaritan, discussed and their dialogue was reflected in the New Testament. On the occasion of Jesus ’ racial origin, many Samaritans believed in him on the occasion of the woman’s words, convinced by the words of Christ himself. The meeting of Jesus and Samaritan took place in the city of Sychar, Samaria, at Jacob’s well. Jesus tired asked the woman to take out water and she refused because of their racial difference. She was a Samaritan and he was a Jew. The ensuing dialogue revealed to the woman how the man she was talking to was the Savior, the Messiah, and ran to tell her fellow citizens. In the two days that followed, most people in the area were convinced that it was their Savior. The well is a deep solid stone well, which has been connected to Jacob for two millennia. It is located within walking distance from the archaeological site of Tell Balata – Palaistinian west bank – the biblical Shechem. Jews, Samaritans, Christians, and Muslims have in their tradition references to Jacob’s well. Jacob's well refers to the New Testament (John 4-5-6) as the point where Jesus discussed with Samaritan woman (Saint Light according to Orthodox tradition), a possible point where Christian baptisms were held. In 384 A.D., a church was built at the site, possibly destroyed during the Samaritan revolutions between 484 and 529 A.D.
