Saint Alexander Alexander Svirsky or Svir (1448 – 1533) is revered as a Saint of Orthodoxy, a monk and abbot of the Russian Orthodox Church. Born into a peasant family in the republic of Novgorod, east of Lake Latoga, he was baptized with the name Amos. At the age of 19, he left his family for the Valaam monastery, spending most of his life as a monk, with long periods of complete isolation. In 1596, Serapion, archbishop of Novgorod appointed him abbot of the Trinity Monastery, later known as the Saint. He became known for his virtuous life and contemplation. His memory is commemorated on April 17 or August 30 by the Eastern Orthodox Church.
