Saint Andrew Andrei Rubliov (c. 1360 -1427 AD) is considered the greatest Russian icon painter of the Middle Ages and one of the greatest icon painters of Byzantine icons. His work resembles that of Theophanes the Greek, but is considered to be superior in terms of depicting the spirituality of the figures. His technique combines asceticism and harmony, as defined by the Byzantine standard. His figures, peaceful and calm, have reduced him to a leader in Orthodox iconography. In 1988 he was declared a saint by the Russian Church under the name Apostle Andrew the Iconographer and his memory is commemorated on July 4.
