Saint Constantine and Saint Helen Flavius Valerius Constantine, known as Constantine the Great or Saint Constantine was emperor of the Western Roman Empire and sole emperor. During the years of his empire, he signed the decree of Milan where he established the principle of secularism, wanting to establish internal peace, moved the capital of his empire from Rome to Constantinople and convened the 1st Ecumenical Council of Nice, the most decisive for the future of the Christian Church. He converted to Christianity shortly before his death. His mother is Saint Helen, who dedicated her life to charitable works and to the spread of Christian teaching. On her own initiative, the magnificent churches of the Nativity in Bethlehem and of the Resurrection, on the hill of Golgotha, were erected, while the discovery of the Holy Cross is also attributed to her. She is almost always depicted with her son Saint Constantine, with the Holy Cross between them.
