Handmade image, crafted on canvas on wood using the method of Byzantine iconography, with a gold background. Saint Dimitrios Born in Thessaloniki (280 AD – 305 AD), he is one of the greatest Martyrs of Christianity. The scion of a rich and aristocratic family, he reached high ranks in the Roman army already at the age of 22 with the rank of centurion. He converted to Christianity when Galerius Maximilian was the commander of the Tetrarch and later emperor, and was imprisoned because he did not deny his faith. In prison he blessed Nestor's disciple to defeat the pagan wrestler Lyaeus, which he did. This victory enraged Maximilian who beheaded Nestor and ordered the assassination of Demetrius with a spear in the ribs. In Byzantine icons, Saint Demetrius is shown several times as a rider on a red horse (Saint George on a white horse), treading on the infidel Lyaeus.
