Saint John Chrysostom Behind the coffin of Saint John Chrysostom in the Holy Great Monastery of Vatopedi on Mount Athos, where the indestructible left ear of the Saint is located in a silver-embroidered case, is the icon of the Saint, crafted according to the technique of Byzantine art. The image depicts the Saint, according to all available historical sources: the Saint's head was large compared to his very small body, which was extremely emaciated. His nose was very long and his nostrils wide. His eyes looked sunken with sharp sockets, while his countenance was pale, sad and often tortured. His forehead was large and clean of hair and furrowed. His beard was thin, and his cheeks always sunken, from the constant fasting by which he passed his life.
