Saint Maximus Maximus the Confessor lived as a prominent citizen, holding high positions in Constantinople from 580 to 662 AD. He joined the imperial administration from a young age, became a monk at Chrysoupolis Monastery, returned to Constantinople to avoid the Persians and from there went to North Africa where he began his action against Monothelitism and Monophysitism. In 646 he organized an ecclesiastical council in Rome against Monothelitism, where the doctrine was condemned, an event that turned against the emperor Constans II. He was tried in Constantinople and sentenced to exile in Laziki on the Pontus. Shortly after, he died. His memory is honored by the Orthodox, Catholic, Lutheran and Anglican Churches.
