At the age of 13 he was orphaned by parents and was forced to work in Chania. There he showed the first signs of leprosy. Not wanting to be confined to Spinalonga he left for Egypt and from there to Chios, in a leprechaun, in which the later Saint Anthimos was the priest. In his 24 years his illness was already evident throughout his body, but this did not prevent St. Anthimos from anointing the Nikiforus monk. His life was characterized by hours of prayer and repentance, by endurance, sweetness, mildness and perseverance, features that did not leave him when he even lost his light because of his illness. In 1957 he was forced to move to Aegaleo, the anti-lephric station of St. Barbara. There, despite his countless plagues, a multitude of people sought to find themselves near him, to see the Holy One in person who, despite his enormous problems, could glorify the name of the Lord.
