Saints Raphael Nikolaos and Irene Saint Raphael was born in Ithaca in 1410 AD, as George Laskaris or Laskaridis. He served in the Byzantine army reaching high levels of hierarchy. At the age of 35, he met an ascetic and venerable elder, John, who led him to the word of God and to the ascetic life. He became a monk, was ordained a presbyter and was honored with the office of archimandrite and archbishop. A few years after the fall of Constantinople in 1450 AD, Saint found himself in Macedonia where he monasticized, with Saint Nikolaos as his subordinate. the persecutions against the Christians led him to Mytilene, where he became Abbot of the monastery of Genesis of the Virgin. In 1463AD, Lesbos fell into the hands of the Turks and died a martyr's death.
