St. Luke the Doctor St. Luke Simferopole and Crimea, known in the Orthodox Church and as St. Luke the Doctor, was a Russian, born in 1877 on the Crimean peninsula. He was a professor of anatomy and surgery at the University of Tashkent. Prominent doctor, with numerous publications -40 scientific works - and recognition by the medical community. He married and had four children. At the age of 38, he lost his wife, who was a nurse, to tuberculosis. He never married again and never stopped visiting her grave, so his circumstances allowed it. In addition to a prominent physician, St. Luke was a Christian. He operated with the image of the Virgin in front of him, while before operating on his patients, at the point of incision, he always made the sign of the cross with an iodine-watered cotton. In 1921 he was ordained a priest and in 1923 Bishop Tashkents, combining priestly with his medical duties. However, his Christian faith led him to streets uncompromising and martyrs, from 1922 to his death. Although persecuted by the official state, St. Luke during World War II offered his services, while he did not stop until his death being a metropolitan. Thousands of people sought his medical help and advice and he gave it without hesitation to everyone. At times they were persecuted, imprisoned, exiled to Siberia. The hardships to which his enemies exposed them were so many, only a miracle could keep him alive.
