Virgin Mary Slaughtered The icon of Virgin Mary Esphamenis is part of a mural of the 14th century. which graces the provnaus of the chapel of Saint Dimitrios, which is an integral part of the main church of the Holy Megist Monastery of Vatopedi. According to a 17th-century manuscript, the image was attacked by a priest and caregiver of the church-neokorou, following an argument with the banker (the head of the dining room) of the Monastery, who refused to give him food when he asked him for a full-time job. Blinded by his suffering and anger, the priestly officer attacked the image of the Virgin Mary with a knife, from which blood was shed. At the request of the abbot of the Monastery and of the whole brotherhood to the Virgin Mary for forgiveness of the unfortunate priest, the Virgin appeared to the abbot and announced his healing and forgiveness. However, the hand with which he had done his "unlawful" would remain "dry" for his entire life and "unsolved" after his death. The priestly spent the rest of his life opposite the image mourning for his sin. After his death, his body was disbanded but his hand remains aseptic to this day in a cocoon under the holy image of the Virgin of Esphagmen.
