Virgin Mary Gorgoepicus In the Holy Monastery of Dochiari on Mount Athos you find an image of the Virgin Mary, the miraculous Virgin Mary Gorgoepikos. The image had probably been written in holy water as early as the 11th century. In 1646, when the Monastery was unable to pay its taxes to the Turkish conquerors, the banker of the Monastery passed in front of the image of the Virgin Mary with torch smoking the image. One day the image "protested" to the monk telling him not to pass and tan it. The monk did not believe that the sound came out of the picture and continued to pass in front of the image by tanning it. At that time, the image "indignant" deprived the monk of his light. In understanding his error he asked her to forgive him and give him his light. So it happened. Our Lady heard his prayer, gave him his light and stated that she wishes to be called Gorgoephecus, because she quickly obeys the prayers of those who invoke it and responds quickly to their demands.
