Christian tradition connects this image with the constant offering to the needy, those affected and in need of love, protection and support. There are reports that it was part of the Monastery of the Lady of Kardiotissa, in the mountains of Diktis. Today the original work is located in the church of St. Alfonso on Esguiline Hill in Rome.
