Virgin Mary Portaitissa In the chapel of the holy Monastery of the Iberians, to the left of the central gate, the icon of the Virgin Mary, with Jesus in her arms, with an imposing and calm look and a drop of blood dripping from the right side of her jaw, is the Portaitissa, the icon that arrived there to guard the Monastery and Agioreitiko Monasticism, the icon that is a guarantee for the monks and a confirmation of Her protection. Christian tradition wants the icon of the Virgin of Portaitissa to have reached the Monastery of Iberi 170 years after its disappearance in 829, where its owner, a pious woman from Nicaea, in her attempt to save it from the iconoclasts, threw it into the sea. In 1004 it appeared as a source of light over the sea off the Monastery of the Iberians. The Virgin appeared to the hermit monk Gabriel and ordered him to take her icon from the sea and give it to the abbot of the Monastery, who in turn placed it in the temple. However, the icon was leaving there and they were above the gate of the Monastery. The Virgin appeared again to the monk Gabriel and asked to be left at the entrance of the Monastery to guard and protect her. For this purpose, a special chapel was built where it houses the guardian of the Monastery, the icon of Virgin Mary Portaitissa.
