Holy Patience The wife of Manuel II Palaiologos, Eleni Dragasi, was the daughter of the ruler-heir of the great Serbian king, Stefanos Dusan. She was born into a royal family and was raised with the Byzantine ideal and her strong faith in God. At the age of 19, she married Manuel II Palaiologos, in 1390, a few months before he became emperor. She reigned with him, suffered humiliation from non-religionists trying to save the dying empire, but also enjoyed raising their eight children with him, two of whom became emperors. Helen – Saint Patience was virtuous, loved the people and always had her door open to them. He spoke softly and sweetly. She was wise and brave and co-ruled with a sense of justice and love. He had a special love for the monasteries, to which he often went to rest and gain courage. In fact, her husband, a few months before his death, became a monk in the Monastery of Pantokrator, while she, after the death of her husband, became a nun, in 1425, in the Monastery of Mrs. Martha and took the name Patience. Three of her children also became monks. She passed away on March 13, 1450, having served 35 years as Emperor and 25 years as a humble nun. Her memory is commemorated on March 13 and May 29.
