Our Lady of Kazan Image inspired by Our Lady of Kazan. Image symbol for the Russian Orthodox Church, the Virgin of Kazan or the Virgin of Kazan, also known as Kazan's Black Virgin, was found in Kazan city, Russia by a young girl, Matrona. At its finding point the Monastery of the Virgin Mary of Kazan was erected where the image was stored until 1904, when it was stolen. Its loss was considered by the church of Russia a source of suffering for the country and even the October Revolution was attributed to it. There are more than sixty copies of this particular image. One of these, a copy of 1730, was transferred to the Vatican in 1993 and became a prayer picture for Pope John Paul II. Today it is kept in the temple of the Height of the Holy Cross in Kazan. In Greece, copies of the Virgin Mary of Kazan are found in the Catholic church of the Holy Monastery of Virgin Mary (Keratea), the chapel of Osias Foreign of Russia (Mandra Attiki) and the Church of the Sleeping of Virgin Mary in Kallithea Attiki.
