Saint Athanasios Athanasios the Great was distinguished for his faith, for his scholarship and for his steadfast defense of the Orthodox faith. Born in 295AD of poor parents he took upon himself the responsibility of his education, and studied by himself, attaining the continual acquisition of knowledge and wisdom, for which he is praised. At the age of 33 he was elected patriarch of Alexandria and from this position he fought for the condemnation of the heretical teaching of Arius. His course in this struggle, although marked by trials and exiles, led him to victory. He fell asleep in 373 AD. His memory is celebrated on January 18.
