Saint Barbara Saint Barbara was born and lived in Nicomedia in Asia Minor, during the reign of Maximilian, in the 3rd century AD. and was known for her beauty and grace. Her father was a fanatical heathen, Dioscorus or Diosorus, who had deprived her of her freedom to protect her from suitors. However, it did not succeed in turning her away from her true love, Christ. Her father, enraged by his daughter's conversion to Christianity, handed her over to the Roman Province, at the time of the persecution of Christians. According to Simeon's biographer, her father himself decapitated her, while he himself was struck dead by lightning, as soon as he had completed his crime. Her memory is celebrated on December 4.
