Saint John the Forerunner Also known by the nickname "patron of monks", Saint John the Forerunner, the baptist of Jesus, is honored more than all the Saints in the Orthodox Church. Countless churches bear his name and many monasteries have been dedicated to him. His ascetic life, his very appearance, imposing and haughty, his words, resounding and dynamic, which managed to awaken many of those who listened to him, made John the Baptist extremely dear to the flock of the Church, which honors him on various days of the year, such as September 23, June 24, August 29, etc., however, the best-known date dedicated to his memory is the 7th of January. The icon of John the Forerunner is painted in hundreds of churches and monasteries throughout Greece and has been depicted since the 10th century as an ascetic, with a rich mane and beard and a sunken face. The depiction of the face of the Saint refers to an icon of Pantokratoros Monastery, in a fresco of the main church of the Catholicos, around 1363 AD.
