Saint Nefskshin Alexander Alexander Yaroslavich, known by the diminutive name given to him after his victory against the Swedes on the Neva River "Nevsky", is considered one of the most important figures in Russia, the leader of the Novgorod Republic and then of all Russia (Russia was later named). At the age of 16 he became Duke of the republic of Novgorod and was called upon to face the Swedes before they entered the fortified Ladoga on the Neva River, where he did so successfully. However, he was sent into an idiosyncratic exile, from which he was recalled to face the invincible Teutonic Knights (1241-1242). Nevsky, driving them to the frozen surface of the lake – Battle of the Ice – marked the end of their expansive advance. He allied himself with the Tatars and even became fraternized with the Great Batu Khan's successor, Sartak, who is said to have been baptized a Christian. In 1252 he became sovereign of all Russia. He died seriously ill at the age of 43 during his journey. In 1547 the Russian Church proclaimed him a saint.
