Saint Nikolaos Among the icons of the Holy Monastery of Vatopedi and that of St. Nicholas, the Saint who holds a special place in the hearts of Christians and is honored by many Churches and Orthodox. Nicholas was born in the late 3rd century in Lycia. At an early age he was ordained an elder and his life was dedicated to his flock, to the poor, to the unworthy, to the people who sought his support, never even seeking to make his actions known, which apart from being divine. During Diocletian's persecutions (303–311 AD), Nicholas was imprisoned, without stopping spreading the Christian religion. He became Bishop during the reign of Constantine the Great and participated in the fight against Martianism. He was buried in the city of Myra, Asia Minor and during the first crusade, his remains were transferred to Bari, Italy, in 1087 AD. His memory is commemorated on December 6th.
