Saint Seraphim of Suraf Born in Kursk, Russia in 1759 to wealthy and devout people. He lost his father only 4 years old, with his mother taking up his upbringing and spiritual cultivation. By his 10 years he was saved twice with God's grace, from certain death. His love for God has been complete since his childhood. At 19 he went to the commune of the desert of Sarov as a cadet, under the obedience of Old Joseph. He served in all the ministries, studied the Bible and a multitude of Fatherly and Ascetic books. He fled to the Sarov desert to practice. During his three years there he became ill from a hydroopia and was saved with the intervention of the Virgin Mary. At the point of his treatment a sacred temple was built with his assistance. In 1786 he took the name Seraphim from his zeal for Jesus and was later ordained a minister and seven years later, priest, without stopping his strict lonely life. Saint Seraphim became known for his spiritual admonitions and for his countless miracles.
