Saint Vladimir The grandson of St. Olga and the illegitimate son of Sviastoslav, the great Duke of Kiev, was appointed by his father as governor of Novgorod, until his persecution in 977 A.D. by his half-brother Yaropolk. He returned three years later with an army, defeated his brother and recaptured Novgorod. He became the only ruler of Russia and known to all for his immorality and barbarity. After the occupation of Crimea in 988 A.D., impressed by the progress of Christianity, he approaches Emperor Basil II the Bulgarianslayer and asks in marriage his daughter Anna, whom he marries. After his marriage to Anna, his life changes radically. Vladimir is reformed, embraces Christianity, builds schools and churches and invites Greek missionaries who teach Christianity in Russia. At the end of his life he lives martyrly, because of his rebellious son Jaroslav, from his first marriage, who kills his two sons with Anna, Roman, and David. He dies sick by proceeding against his rebel son. He is considered a protector of the Russian Church.
