Saints Raphael Nikolaos and Irene Saint Raphael was born in Ithaca in 1410 AD, as George Laskaris or Laskaridis. He served in the Byzantine army reaching high levels of hierarchy. He became a monk, was ordained a presbyter and was honored with the office of archimandrite and archbishop. In 1463AD, Lesbos fell into the hands of the Turks and died a martyr's death.
