Saint Matthew Matthew, Christ’s disciple who wrote the first Gospel of the New Testament in 64 C.E., was a tax collector in the profession and a Galileo in origin. Jesus chose him as his disciple and he immediately responded to his call and followed him. He abandoned his profession and offered his home to Christ. The Pharisees who even saw Jesus at a tax collector’s house accused him of hanging out with a sinner.
