The Ascension The stage depiction of Ascension renders, in complex shape and in detail, the culmination of Christ's course. The illustration located in the Monastery of Stavronicata in a rendering of Theophanes of Crete is a representative example of a Cretan School of the second half of the 15th century. At the top of the picture is Christ sitting in round glory held by two angels. At the back of the scene, the rocks with olives indicate the place where Ascension, the Mount of Olives took place. The apostles in the front, with Paul left and Peter right, stand close to each other, with agitation and surprise.
