The Birth of the Virgin The birthday of the Virgin Mary, the feast of Theometor, which our church commemorates every year on September 8th, since the end of the 5th century. Pope Sergios I was the one who established the celebration of the birth of the Virgin Mary as an official feast of the Church and included it in the celebration of the Western Church. Four centuries later, the birth of the Virgin was celebrated throughout Christianity. The birthday of Theotokos was a source of inspiration for prominent hymnographers, such as Romanos Melodos, but also painters, who created images of high techniques and exquisite mosaic works. In Byzantine hagiography the icon of the Nativity depicts the Virgin within a cradle as an infant, while in almost all the images the figure of St. Anne, which is usually depicted half seated in a bed with rather sad expression on her face, while slaves rush to treat her as a lechen.
