The Baptist The feast of Saints Theophanies, from the 2nd century already, is one of the most important celebrations of our church. Christ’s baptism sanctified the water, which became a water of sanctification and reconciliation for man and God. By the grace of baptism man is accepted into the kingdom of the heavens. One of the icons that compose the Dodekaorto (the twelve most important celebrations of Orthodoxy) is that of Baptism. This icon is a relief of the Baptized Jesus Christ of the corresponding image of Baptism adorning the Catholic of the Holy Monastery of Stavros on Mount Athos, belongs to the Cretan School and is signed by Theophanes the Cretan. On the upper part there is a semicircle which symbolizes the opening of the heavens, from which the Holy Spirit descends, in kind of dove, in the head of Christ. The Jordan River, with swimming fish and a half-dressed woman on a dragon, symbolizing the Red Sea, is depicted with intense movement among tall rocks. On the river stands Christ, naked, only with a white cloth in his waist, with intense lines erasing the chest, shoulders, abdomen. On one bank of the river is the Prodromos, with one hand on the head of Christ and the other on a prayer stand. On the opposite bank the form of four angels is depicted. The three worship Christ and the fourth prays, gazing at heaven.
