The story of Our Lady of Dawn, also known as Our Lady Ostra Brama, begins in 1386, the year of the marriage of the Prince of Lithuania Jagiell to Polish Princess Jadwiga. The union of the two brought Christianity into the lives of the Lithuanians as an official religion and a unification of the two nations into a Commonwealth. The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was a federal monarchy-democracy, designed by the King of Poland and the Grand Duke of Lithuania, in which he led an elected monarch. At the beginning of the 15th century the walls of the city of Vilnius were built, where over every central gate the inhabitants of the city also placed an image of the blessed Virgin. A century later, the battalion of Carmelite monks, which were famous for their devotion to the Virgin Mary, took over one of the parish churches in the region of the southeastern gate, which in Lithuanian language is known as the "gate of Dawn" or "Ostra Brama" and in which they placed the image of the Virgin Mary above the gate near the church. In 1655 the army of Moscow set Vilnius on fire, which after 16 consecutive days of fire, suffered a huge destruction, but the image of the Virgin Mary above the gate had remained completely intact. The event strengthened the courage and faith of the people of Vilnius in Our Lady. In 1711, the chapel guarding the image was burned again completely, but not before saving the image from a young monk.
