Handmade image, crafted on canvas on wood using the method of Byzantine iconography, with a gold background. Virgin Mary Glykofilousa One of the most familiar depictions of the Virgin. The Cretan iconographers of the 15th and 16th centuries used to reproduce the image with a more popular version, that of Emmanuel Lombard - a great painter of post-Byzantine icons - who lived in the second half of the 16th century. The original is on display at the Benaki Museum.
