Our Lady Portaitissa In the chapel of the Holy Monastery of Ibera, left of the main gate, the image of the Virgin Mary, with Jesus in her arms, with an imposing and calm look and a drop of blood dripping from the right of her jaw, is Portaitissa, the image that came up there to guard the Monastery and the Agioritikos Monachism, the image that is a guarantee for the monks and confirmation of her protection. The Christian tradition wants the image of Our Lady Portaitissa to have arrived at the Monastery of Ivira 170 years after her disappearance in 829, where her owner, a devout woman from Nice, in her attempt to save her from the iconoclasts threw her into the sea. In 1004 he appeared as a source of light over the sea on the edge of the Monastery of Ibera. Theotokos appeared to the hermit monk Gabriel and ordered him to take her image from the sea and give it to the abbot of the Monastery, who in turn placed her in the temple. However, the image was leaving there and were above the gate of the Monastery. Theotokos appeared again to the monk Gabriel and asked to be left at the entrance of the Monastery to guard and protect her.
