Virgin Mary Stepatariss The Virgin Mary the Baptist, the Virgin Mary with Jesus in her arms, is placed in the synthron, in the seats for the elders behind the Holy Bank, Vatopedi Monastery and is a feast image of the Monastery, since it is located in its dormitory. According to Christian tradition, the image has been associated with two miracles. The first report mentions the rescue from the shipwreck of the son of Emperor Theodosius, Arkadius, with the intervention of the Virgin, where he carried him ashore on a vato (thomnos). There the rescued Arkadios found this image of the Virgin Mary, in the same area that later the Vatopedi Monastery would be built. The second miracle refers to an event that took place in the 10th century in the Monastery. A priestly minister of the Monastery and of the Bimaari, responsible for the sacred step of the Catholic with the sacred remains, utensils, vestments, etc., under the name of Savvas, in a raid of Arabs in the Monastery threw the image of the Virgin along with the cross of Constantine the Great into a well along with a lit candle. The monk was taken captive to Crete and upon his return to Mount Athos, seventy years later, he found the image and cross standing on the water of the well and the candle still lit. The picture is celebrated on Tuesday of the Diaceneism (week starting on Easter Sunday and ending on Thomas Sunday).
